Thoughts On Site Aimed At Myspace Gen

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
We created a site that is aimed at Myspacers. It is a compilation of all the various layout sites in a searchable format. Basically, the google for myspace layouts, backgrounds images etc...

We are still compiling images, but wanted to get a first crack of an overall critique of the website, its ease of use, and any other first reaction feedback. The main focus of the site is of course the "Swag Search" where a visitor can search by keywords, categories, types, colors etc...Any constructive comments would be great.

If you want to "try out" the search, then a few keywords that work are:

puppy
puppies
johnny depp

So give it a whirl and let us know what you think!

Just a note, some of the links at the bottom do not work, we are still working on copy.

Thanks for your feedback!

I think the concept is very good. And you're right--the majority of the site/images should be aimed at the under 25 crowd. A few things that can set your site apart from similar sites...

--Make it easy to narrow down a layout theme without having to page through 42 different pages.
--Include themes that will also work for MySpace's older and business users.
--Provide some reassurance for tech-savvy users that your code is clean (ie no cookies, trojans, etc.)

In my experience, the sites you're competing with are difficult to navigate and offer few real choices that aren't syrupy sweet or skull-heavy.

And while teens/twenties are major users of MySpace, realize that a very large number of grown-up and business users are also seeking suitable swag for their sites, so including them could bring you additional traffic.

I think it is useful for people wanting to bling out their social network pages. However, with the arrival of so many newer social network sites like Facebook and Ning where else do you plan on taking it?

There is a misconception about who uses Myspace. Here are some demographics complied by Comscore in 2006. If anything this demo has gotten older in the last couple of years.

    Age 12-24 30%
    Age 25-34 16.%
    Age 35-54 40.%
    Age 55+ 11%

    I rounded them off.

The site seems easy to use. You just have to get the images up and see what happens. The hardest part is not having the site working, but rather getting people to visit.

How would you recommend getting people to come to the site? There are always questions on yahoo answers about where to go for myspace layouts and I was going to start providing answers there, and focus on word of mouth with my friends who currently use myspace. Any other ideas?

"Finding swag for your page has never been so easy" tagline is confusing, since "swag" and "page" aren't quite clear. Instead, "Finding images for your MySpace page has never been easier"

I didn't notice any analytics on your home page. I hope you'll have them for your (and your advertiser's) sake.
