What's The Best Case For Conducting Research Before Developing The Plan?

Many clients's familiarity of their product, market and competition lead them to believe they have a clear and precise understanding of all that needs to be known before they develop their go-to-market strategies. This I believe is dangerous and naive. However, it is a real and present obstacle to overcome when pitching business.

Does anyone have a good argument for overcoming this obstacle?
