Editing Client Testimonials - Should We Or Not?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am responsible for gathering user testimonials about our courses. 70% of our participants are international, so they do not have perfect written or spoken English. We use these testimonials on our website as well as in printed collateral. What are the opinions of editing for perfect grammar?

Keep in mind that when requesting a testimonial, I ask if it is okay to edit for clarity.

go for it-- you've covered all bases. Better to edit than sound like jibberish and dilute the credibility of the testimonial.

Of course you edit for grammar! Every testimonial I use always understands it may be edited some. For best practices, just send it back to them first-- "I made some small changes and wanted to make sure you approve." I've always found they're thrilled to sound so much more eloquent!

    Amy,

If you've asked them and they've given you permission - then it's perfectly OK. It would not be honest to change the meaning. Like the testimonial says that your company is an OK job and you change it to "the best job I've ever done." But, hey, there are companies that "make up" testimonials too! I don't recommend this because it catches up to you eventually. The risk you run with editing the testimonials is that the person sees it and says, "Hey, I didn't say that!" But, you're OK because you've asked permission and you are making it correct from a grammar and spelling perspective.

    I hope this helps.

I suggest you edit the response, then ask the person if they mind if you paraphrase....

Most people prefer for their words to sound intelligent....
