How To Find: Freelancer/partner For Pr Or Ad Sales

Posted by Anonymous on 100 Points
Suggestions for how to find the right person?

We create mobile video content for 20-somethings. And would like to find the right person to work as a partner or freelancer to provide PUBLIC RELATIONS GUIDANCE and/or SELL ADVERTISING for our business. Ad sales commission will be 30-50%. Ads on our DVD cases, on our web site, at our on-campus events, product placements in our videos, etc.

Any suggestions for how I should meet, connect, talk to and screen candidates would be much appreciated. I just don't want to put an ad on craigslist.

We are in Silicon Valley, but know that the right person could be anywhere!

Why not put an ad on Craigslist, but require that all candidates have demonstrated (exceptional) experience selling ads for your target market? You want someone to start that already knows the marketplace and has contacts that can make things happen quickly/easily.

I recently had a client I coached on this. Ideally, you need a person with established contacts in this field. Secondly, would be someone already in a "hunter" position with a good record of closing. She started with Craigs list-- she brought someone on that produced little for her. Then I had my client call her competitors. If you are in the field you know who they are. Instead of directly recruiting, she asked if they knew someone in the field looking to make a change. She found someone in a similar magazine, that wanted out-- and felt hers was better quality that represented him better.

Thanks to both of you. These are things I never would have thought of! Anyone else have suggestions?

A feedback question for CarolBlaha: Thinking about how I can implement your answer... You say if I am "in the field" I know who my competitors are. This is all new to me. Which field do you mean -- ad sales? I produce video content for mobile. Right now, no one else makes what we do. So I'm sort of at a loss for who to call.

If your videos for mobile is sold for advertising purposes, you need someone in advertising. If its OEM (I did a google search and saw cell makes market their own) then you need someone calling on those contacts. If that is the case, look at sites like www.rephunter.com-- the cream of reps are on www.manaonline.org. Think who would be your target market-- who is already calling on them?
