I'm not familiar with the term "Product Statement of Direction." Since you are asking the question of a bunch of marketing professionals, I'm assuming this is the document marketers prepare to define product functionality for the technical development team.

If that's right, then I suspect it's a first cousin to the Creative Brief -- which defines the specs for creative projects ... often advertising, package design, logos, etc.

If I'm on the right track, let me know and I have a few documents that would help with your task. If I'm wrong, maybe you can tell us what you're trying to accomplish, and perhaps we can be more helpful.

In short, it is a document created for the software customer to summarize the planned direction for software development. Many of the big name software companies have created SODs, just google to see their recent examples.
