Judging Video Clips At A Festival

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Were looking at having a small comedy festival in our town. One idea was making 10 funny categories and having videos taken off youtube and having people vote the best in each category. Some of the videos feature celebrities. ie ellen or jim carrey etc. Is this legal or do we have get permission from their respective studios.

If you're making this a public event, you will have to obtain permission from the studios.

Video use is tricky. Just because someone uploaded a video to YouTube doesn't mean they have ownership rights to do so. Therefore, taking a video off YouTube for viewing (or reuse) doesn't truly constitute "in the public domain". If the video is copyrighted, then your use for business purposes may be problematic (and may require permission/licensing).

You might consider using videos that are already marked as Creative Commons [CC BY] (for example, https://www.youtube.com/results?suggested_categories=23%2C1%2C17&search...). For more info: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Instead of trying to reuse other's videos, why not have a comedy video contest. Let people send YOU videos to screen/vote on as a community for your festival.
