How Do You Sell Your First Online Advertising?

Posted by amanda on 250 Points
Hi guys,

I am a publisher who started a website 2 years ago that's been growing fast (1400% over the last 3 months), and my content has started being picked up by other leading B2B companies.

I know I have a very profitable niche, and most of my audience makes $100K+ (it's B2B). So, I'm looking into monetizing it.

The question is, how do I sell my first online ad spaces, and approach advertisers? If I hire a commission based sales consultant, where do I find one? Is that a better alternative?

I'd start by identifying 3 or 4 companies whose target audience matches yours, and develop a presentation for each of them ... laying out the potential benefit for them and offering them a low-risk trial campaign.

If the trial campaign is successful, they'll sign-on for a more extensive commitment, and you can use their results to approach more advertisers. If it's not successful, you may need to re-think your strategy, or help them fix their ads until you can demonstrate that you're generating an attractive return for them.

The whole idea won't work if it doesn't generate an attractive ROI for your advertisers.

You leverage what you have accomplished so far. You tell the adverstisers your growth numbers achieved in the past 2 years. You tell them you want to help others gain exposure from what you have accomplished, and you will be doing this at a fraction of the cost of attaining this themselves on their own. You are opening this unique opportunity first time to others, sharing the wealth per se. Note everything in your message has to be all about them.

As far as where to find them- you will take what you have learned about your demographics- answer this question, who will benefit from the statement above. Now go pick up the phone and call them.
