Can I Use A Company's Logo When Pitching At Them?

Posted by Cpec on 125 Points
We are a small non-profit organisation and have started writing partnership proposals to send to businesses of varying sizes, and are using our logo and the other company's logo on the top of the proposal sheet as a visual display strategy.
Does anyone have any advice on whether this is an acceptable use of someone's logo as we haven't sourced prior approval from them to use their copyrighted logo in our written pitch to them?

    To them.

Pitch to them and to their self interests.

I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice.

It's done all the time, and most folks don't object. But some prospects wince a bit when they see their logo used in a presentation to them. They begin to think they are getting a canned presentation that has been personalized for them by putting their logo into a template.

If you really want to personalize your pitch, make it all about the prospect's company and the issues facing them. Don't just copy-and-paste their logo into a stock presentation. Show them you've done your homework "for real."

Why do you even want to use their logo in your presentation? Are you afraid they won't be interested otherwise?

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. Yes, I think we've been using logos of other companies as a way to hint at how partnership would 'look' as part of the pitch, but we certainly also personalise our pitch to each company as well so it sounds like we're on track with what we're doing.
