Branding Myself

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I have 6 years Gov't Affairs experience, 6 years in Corporate communications and 3 years Marketing Communications experience. I'm dusting off my resume and I'm struggling with how to position myself.

I'm looking for the best hybrid language to use in "branding" myself. I don't want to be limited to just one practice.

I'm toying with the label Business Communications Professional as a way to capture all three. I hope there are a few folks out there with similar backgrounds who can provide some insights?

Thanks!

How you brand yourself depends on what job you want. Start by defining your target audience, just as you would with a more traditional brand. Then identify the most important needs of that target audience. Then position yourself to address those needs.

Remember, branding is a lot more than naming or labeling. It's the total package that your target audience will see/experience. Just saying you are something doesn't make it so.

If your skill set and experience don't make you ideal for a target employer, then maybe you've picked the wrong employer. Job searches are more about finding the company who needs you most than they are about finding a company who will hire you.

And Tamara has made an exellent suggestion, if I say so myself. The Potato Chip Difference : How to apply leading edge marketing strategies to landing the job you want is probably the fastest, easiest way to get the information you need.

You can get the book at Amazon.com or bn.com, through most bookstores in the US, or at the website www.potatochipdifference.com . You can read the introduction and chapter 1 at that website too.

P.S. Thanks, Tamara. It's always gratifying to know that people have found the book useful.

    Cookie,

    great advice above. Just remember...

"YOU ARE UNIQUE" & "YOU ARE SPECIAL"

THE QUICKEST WAY TO FAILURE IS...
most people fail because they TRY TO BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE. Don't you do that, Don't you travel that road and Don't you consider that as an option...

    BE YOURSELF...
You're much to special to try being all things to all people. Just settle for being yourself. That really is more unique than you could ever imagine.

Have you thought about how special you really are?

IT'S ALL YOU (JUST THINK...NO ONE ELSE CAN BE THAT!)
Have you ever just slowed down a moment to consider that no one has hands quite like yours, feet exactly like yours, or that beautiful smile only you have. From the twinkle in your eye to the sparkle on your teeth...it's all you and no one else has anything nearly as unique as that.

IT'S THE SAME WAY WITH YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE, point of view and creative gifts. They are unique to you and if you would just slow down and think about it you are uniquely different from an employment background level too.

LET OTHER PEOPLE TRY TO "BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE"
There is something unique about you that everyone will want to know what it is but they'll never find out if you try to be all things to all people. They actually miss your uniqueness and Cookie you are unique. And there really is a "potato chip difference" ask MGoodman.

just a thought/idea that corssed my mind on branding yourself, you can position yourself as the

    1. "Public & Private Sector Communication Specialist"

    2. "Government & Corporate Communication Specialist"

    3. Communication Specialist of Government, Corporate and Marketing sectors"

    hope this helps.

    cheers!!
