I like SageHill's clear and direct definitions.

Your second question is somewhat confused. Perhaps this will help:

As SageHill says, 'Marketing' is everything you do to move your product or service. This includes research, branding, pricing, design, product placement, distribution channels, advertising, etc.

'Communications', in its broadest sense, is the design and delivery of messages. That can be anything from internal communications to your staff to speeches by your CEO.

So, 'Marketing Communications' is that branch of communications dedicated to supporting your marketing efforts.

If you label your department as Marketing Communications, you are saying that it handles ONLY that type of communications.

If you call it Marketing AND Communications, you are saying that it handles both the marketing and broader communications functions.

As many people argue, ALL of your communications should be in direct or indirect support of your marketing efforts. If it's not helping your bottom line, goes the argument, why are you doing it? That's why many folks like to talk about 'Integrated Marketing Communications', where the two functions work hand in glove together.

    Hope that clarifies things ...
