Terms For Providing Contributed Articles

Posted by dbrown on 125 Points
My company contributes articles to industry-specific publications on topics that are relevant to our product, but are not advertorials. What would be reasonable terms to request of the media? We want the flexibility to offer the article to other publications in the industry, but not in direct competition such as different geographic coverage, language, etc. Would appreciate advice on what to require before offering the article. Thanks

Every publication has its own rules. Some ask for 120 days exclusivity before you re-release the material. Others ask for no work with the direct competition. Others just dont care. They are looking for foder to line the back side of advertising.

I use these exclusively. And as my reputation has grown I find myself setting up tiers of publications.
1st Tier - massive clout in the market/lots of subscribers/generate web hits and business.... I do what ever they want, whenever they want.
2nd Tier - lesser clout, I give them 90 exclusives
3rd Tier - I give them the information and ask only that my authors box show up.

Denise -- Frank, as usual, gave good information.

If you mean article submission for company/product/service publicity (which is free) vs. ad space that you buy --

When submitting articles, include author's byline after the title plus a short sentence at the end of the article that says something relevant about the author and her knowledge of the topic ( like "an experienced marketing consultant," "inventor of energy-efficient lighting").

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

    Thank you for your responses.

Frank, I want to ensure I understood correctly. Are you saying that you only ask for the author's box on 3rd tier pubs? I think it should be a minimum requirement for all 'white paper' type articles. Do you leave it up to the editors of the other tier pubs?

I guess what I'm also asking is "is it OK to insist that the pub allow me to submit the paper to other pubs, that don't compete in areas such as geography, language, etc?" Is it reasonable to ask for the right to reprint the article (web and/or print) without going through the pub? Any other reasonable requests I can make? My boss thinks we should have a list of things we want. Any other thoughts?
