How do you know you've got a good website? If you make a change on your website, how do you know you've made things better? Traditional website strategy was to get as many people as possible to visit and hope good things happened. However, people come to your website because they have something very specific they want to do. Website marketing is about helping people become more successful at the task they came to complete. So here's the thing: You don't need a website strategy; you need a task strategy. Manage the customer task, and measure website success based on task completion.
Gerry McGovern focuses on helping large organizations create customer-centric websites. Since 1994, when he started his Web career, he has published five books and consulted in 35 countries. His latest book is called The Stranger’s Long Neck (A&C Black, 2010). He is CEO of Customer Carewords, and his clients include Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. In 2006, the Irish Times described Gerry as one of five visionaries who had had a major impact on the development of the Web.
